AAA has decided against making an official travel forecast for Labor Day 2021. However, according to CBSN in New York City, the travel club has suggested there could be more than three million trips on MTA bridges and tunnels during this upcoming holiday weekend. That would put this year’s Labor Day travel in and around NYC near pre-pandemic levels – and should be enough to prompt even the most cautious driver to be very careful while traveling this weekend.

Drinking and Driving

Drunk driving accidents spike in the period between Memorial Day and Labor Day every year. The summer day with the largest number of drunk driving accidents is July 4th, but the bookending holidays – Memorial Day and Labor Day – each see a larger number of these serious and often fatal car accidents than most.

You can do your part to help prevent an accident this weekend (and always) by refusing to drive while intoxicated. If you plan on drinking to celebrate the holiday, use mass transit, call a rideshare, hail a cab, or rely on a sober friend.

The same applies to driving while high. Marijuana has been legalized for recreational use, but driving while high is exceptionally dangerous – and will always be illegal.

Pay Attention!

Remember that distracted driving is a leading cause of car accidents in New York. Do your part to help prevent causing a distracted driving accident this weekend (and always) by:

  • Putting your cellphone out of reach
  • Pre-programing GPS
  • Eating and drinking at a table
  • Grooming yourself in a bathroom
  • Letting a passenger control electronics

Anything that takes your eyes and/or attention off of the road is a form of distraction. All forms of distraction are deadly. With the increase in traffic expected over this upcoming weekend, your full attention will be needed to help keep yourself and everyone else on the road safe.
