A new study from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has found that pickup trucks and SUVs hit and injure pedestrians at a rate much higher than other types of motor vehicles. This is even though SUVs and pickup trucks account for only a small percentage of vehicles on the road.

According to the IIHS, while SUVs, vans, minivans, and pickup trucks are more likely to strike pedestrians in general, risks are significantly increased when these vehicles are turning. The IIHS reports that:

  • Fatal Pedestrian Accident Risks Increase When Turning Left. 2x for SUVs, 3x for vans and minivans, and 4x for pickup trucks
  • Fatal Pedestrian Accident Risks Increase When Turning Right. 89% higher for pickups, 63% higher for SUVs

Even when not turning, larger vehicles are associated with a greater number of serious and fatal pedestrian accidents. Accidents involving SUVs are 51% more likely to result in pedestrian death, regardless of where the accident occurs. Accidents involving pickup trucks are 25% more likely to result in fatalities than those involving smaller vehicles.
